I recently recalled that it costs $.61 per 24 hour day to run a computer (.40 for 16 hour day/.20 for 8 hour day).
So if someone had a server set up at their house that ran all day everyday not only woud they have the maintance to worry about but the cost. In the average month (30.24 days) it would cost someone $18.55 to run a server, that's also with the poor bandwith that those servers tend to have.
In renting a server that cost say $50.00 a month If you split that 3 ways not only are you paying less, you have better bandwith so you can support more players.
I thought this was interesting, there is more that I will add later. --Cuban--

Cool research Cubes, thanks for sharing. Splitting the costs is the best way to rent!

Hey cookies,
Is your Full Server a public one? If so what is the IP of it...I would like to check it out ($20/mo is a good deal).

Ty for the Info, It Odd to me tho, I own 3 Pentiums, 2 HPs, 1 Dell and 1 Old com that I don't run to often... The old Com is Old. I leave my Computer Runing A Lot It is the Dell Com I own.. It was a bad com when I got it....256mb RAM, 128mb Video card... and so.... My NET Speed is faster then Any LAN Or T Or Modem. Its speed is 2.4 GHz, I do Share the Connection. Dial-Up= 0.54 MBPs Cable = 100 MBPs DSL= 200 MBPs T1 = 500 MBPS T2 = 1000 MBPs T3 = 1500 MBPs What do I have??? = 2.4GHz There is a Wireless thing for it to, You can connect it to a USB or inside a computer/Motherboard, You can get Deferent Speeds for Wireless, And the Weakest one is like Dial-Up = 0.54MBPs. There is more then 33 Channels.? Any way, Can someone Tell me what or if that is it's real speed? How much MBPs is it out of the 2.4GHz. I'm honestly lost on my Network Speed?

I know the wireless speeds but not the Network speed that the wireless thing connects to. The link tells me my computers thing that connects to my network, That I all ready know, I need to know what 2.4? ghz on my Network hub speed is? The link doesen't help me. Thanks anyway. ;D

not really sure what it is except has to do with the speed. I don't know how you would get the hud speed

Bandwith is what allows multipul people play on the same server. The better bandwith the better, then more people can play on a server with no lag.
I can't explain it really well but I think Ugly can, so ugly help us out here.

iDie,
To check your bandwith go to
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
then pick a state closest to you from the list on the left. Wait while it checks your Download and UPload speeds.
Bandwith is like a garden hose...the greater the diameter the more water that can pass through it...its the same way with information across the internet. The more bandwith you have, the more information that can pass at any given time.
A simple explanation of servers and the need for bandwith: the DOWNLOAD speed (speed at which you receive data) is usually not the issue when setting up a server on a traditional home DSL or Cable connection...its the UPLOAD speed (speed at which you send data), and lack of it, which hinders the smooth gamability of a home-based server.
For Example:
You may have a dowload speed of 3-5Mb but your upload may be something like 300-500kb. So looking at UPLOAD speeds: This translates to you being able to play smoothly on a good dedicated server at a remote location because you only have to upload your player movements, actions, chat, etc. HOWEVER, if you host a server, the server must process every players' movements, actions, chat, etc. and this will usually max out or exceed the average persons upload bandwidth resulting in a very laggy, unplayable, server when more than a few players are present.
I hope this helps.

iDIe,
It sounds like you have the same router speeds as I do... 2.4ghz -- unfortunately we are not connecting to the internet at this speed
Your router is like the biggest part of the "Funnel" then cat 5 or cat 6 cable, then it really gets small when you hook up to the internet. Think of when you pour alot of liquid or oil into a funnel, the big part usually fills up because the small part is restricting the flow. This is why LAN parties ROCK !!!! The small part of the funnel isn't very small (unrestricted data flow)...as a result you can hook up a bunch of players with very low pings.
Make sure to run the tests in the previous post I made. This will give you a rough idea of your actual net speed / bandwidth.

Thanks for the info ugly, Good to know what it is now, lol. ;D I'm going to look more in to that and see if I can get something that will boost my Internet and bandwith if possible.
